Follow Your Heart?

“The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?” Jeremiah 17:9

I suppose no one ever really arrives at a point where they know exactly what they want, how they’re going to get it, and when, for every aspect of their lives. But in your teenage years and early adulthood, it’s to be expected to not know what you’re going to do, where you’re going to go, how, or when.

Occasionally I will get phone a call from friends with more or less these questions. “What now?” So many times it’d be easier to give an answer that I’ve heard often, have read often, and even have been told often.

“Follow your heart”

It’s short to say, common enough, gives the person the responsibility of figuring out what it is their heart is saying, and you will seem like a good enough friend.

But think about it. Do I really want to give someone this advice?  Do I want to take this advice?

What is my heart full of? What is your heart full of? How could I know? What if our hearts are full of evil and sin? Wait a minute. “What if?” Aren’t they?

The Bible tells us that “The heart is deceitful above all things..” To follow our hearts, would be dangerous. No matter what we think, we really don’t know what’s best for us. We don’t really know which path will make us happier.

Our hearts’ desire changes; it’s rarely stable. If we follow it, we will end up meandering and walking in circles. I don’t want to waste my time walking in circles; I don’t want you to waste your time walking in circles.

“Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths.” -Proverbs 3:5-6

God’s will for us never changes; it is stable. If we follow His plans for us, we will find our life’s path so fulfilling and happy. God doesn’t promise an easy life here on earth, but He promises to guide us, and be there for us if we allow Him to.

Isn’t that so much more reliable advice? Isn’t His wisdom much more steadfast, and aren’t His plans much more sure?

“And ye shall seek Me, and find Me, when ye shall search for Me with all your heart.”
 – Jeremiah 29:13
If we search for Him, if we search for His will, He won’t leave us guessing. His plans for each of us are different. Not all of us are meant to serve in the same way. Following His will doesn’t mean we all will become full-time missionaries to foreign countries. He needs doctors, nurses, bankers, writers, readers, helpers, followers, leaders.
Whatever it is that He has in store for me and for you, is what will make us happy. Have you found out what that is yet?

I was reading this, thinking how lovely it is. Then I read that question at the end, and it made me stop and really think. I guess I'm still figuring it out. But, I'm trying, so that's the important part.

Good advice. I think it is why is is important to have peace and calm in your life so you can recognize when you receive His guidance.

Well said, Larissa. And such an important thing to have learned so young. Brava!
