Sometimes I wonder what it’s like. To be from a completely different era, an age so long ago and yet so recent. To be, for example, from the 40’s and live in today’s world. I wonder if it happens slowly and you adapt. You see women’s skirts transitioning from calf-length to hip length, popular music changing from Sinatra to what you hear when you turn on the radio today, academic standards waver and fall, technology making possible the unimaginable….
I wonder how that feels. I wonder if it’s sad, exciting, thrilling, exasperating, despairing…
I wonder if the new things simply ease into your life and you don’t even notice the changes until one day you wake up and realize that “what’s in” has gone from dapper suits and Bing Crosby to … well whatever it is today. And suddenly there are these contraptions called computers and calculators, and Facebook has nothing to do with a book nor does cellphone mean a phone in a prison cell, man has stepped on the moon and pneumonia is no longer a deadly threat…
Sometimes I wonder how much wisdom all these changes can bring. Wisdom, memories, sadness, happiness, awe… Which one of these the most?
